5 tips for training happy and healthy!

Running is the ultimate metaphor for life in the sense that there are good and bad days. I have always believed the more consistent you are, the more good days you have than bad. I have so much respect for the athletes who maintain a healthy balance of success and happiness along the way. Here a few a tips I have for anyone in search of training happy and healthy.

  • Follow a plan! There is a method to this madness! A structured plan allows you to plan intensity, recovery, and everything in between. Runners who follow a plan are more likely to stay healthy than those who don’t. The plan is your road map, if you know where you are headed you will likely stay on course.

  • Don’t overreact to the good or bad runs! A consistent training cycle is never going to be perfect. It’s important to stay present in your training. Never dwell on a bad run or workout. On the flip side, don’t allow yourself to get too caught up in your success. Training is a moving part and requires your focus each and every day.

  • Take care of the little things! My college coach, Bob Hamer preached this all the time to our team. If you want to stay healthy, you must be consistent with your sleep, stretching, nutrition, and all the other little things that make the biggest difference in the long run!

  • Sign up for the races that best fit you! At the end of the day, this sport is our hobby. I firmly believe it’s important to sign up for races that best fit your running style. Training should be an added bonus to your life, not an added stress. If you enjoy the trails, train on trails. If you enjoy the roads, run the roads. It’s that simple!

  • Be grateful for your health and ability! There are a lot of days in this sport where we feel flat. However, training flat is always better than being injured. Be grateful for every opportunity you get to lace up your shoes. If you truly appreciate your running, you will think of the sport in a positive way. Your attitude drives the ship!
