The power of consistency

There is a direct correlation between consistent hard work and consistent positive results from an athlete. It’s the easiest yet hardest concept for many to understand. One of the things I pride myself most on is my ability to work hard. I never had a great deal of talent as an athlete, however, I realized really young that there was a positive outcome to putting in hard work.

Whether it was shooting free throws in the mornings and at night, swinging baseballs off the tee, or logging miles alone in the dark, I have found an enjoyment in doing the things that aren't celebrated in the moment with a trophy or crowd full of fans cheering you on. Outside of my own ambition as an athlete, I have realized just how fun it is to train as hard if not harder at being the best coach I can be for my athletes.

I recognize that people are choosing to put their trust and support in me on a daily basis. There are lots of options when it comes to coaching. When I wake up each morning, I understand just how lucky I am to have the opportunity to work with any athlete on our team. Over the last 6 years, runners on our team have proven just how valuable consistent training is for our long term success. We have had a great deal of improvement whether it be athletes accomplishing their goal of qualifying for the Boston Marathon or runners finishing their first 5k without walking.

On my end it has been about convincing people to stay committed to their program. On the athletes end, it’s their responsibility to wake up each day with not only the intent to workout but to actually execute regardless of what their mind is telling them on that given day. With fall races right around the corner, many of us are realizing just how valuable the work we did in the winter and spring has been for our summer success. Don’t discredit your commitment and focus here. Keep showing up and you will find yourself achieving your personal best more times than one.
