Tips for training through a winter storm!
As you know, there is a good amount of snow and ice entering the area starting tomorrow morning. With the temps being so cold for several days, that will cause issues on the roads and trails for days to come. I have some advice on how to approach the rest of the week below.
Safety comes first: If it's safe to run outside, then, that's the best place to get your run in. The roads in Forest Park and off Wydown are typically plowed. Forest Park actually plows their bike path so follow their social media channels for updates. Those are my go to spots to run when it snows. With that said, if the roads are icy, run on the treadmill, cross train the same duration your run would be, or take the day off. Your safety is what matters most! If you are unsure, side on caution.
Bag the speedwork: If you have a workout and there is no safe place to do it, bagging the speed workout isn't going to hurt you. You are better off trying to get minutes in opposed to hurting yourself running fast in dicey conditions.
Be careful running in the snow: We love running in the snow. It's honestly some of the most enjoyable weather to train in. My fondest memories of training has been in those epic snowstorms. With that said, there are a few very important things to remember. Lots of runners get hurt running too far and too fast in the snow. Adjust your pace and go off the minutes you typically run opposed to the distance prescribed for the day. If you find yourself favoring one side or overly fatiguing your legs, cut your run short. Ice a lot of times is hidden under the snow. Be careful if you choose to run in it and if you run into any patches of ice, turn around and call it for the day.
Layer up: It's crucial that you layer up in these conditions. Adding snow and wet feet will make 20 degrees feel much much colder. Be smart in how you dress and stay close to your home or car.
Family comes first: A lot of you are parents and have very busy schedules during snow days. Your family comes first and your kids only get to experience sledding on days with lots of snow so many times in their childhood. If you have to adjust your training, don't beat yourself up. Try your best to run before the kids are up and if you do end up sledding, BE CAREFUL!!! No need for adults getting hurt.
Have fun and be safe. Please reach out if you have any questions in regards to adjusting your schedule these next few days. Post some photos on our social media groups so we can bond together while in quarantine. Thanks!
